1. Go fishing independently

Grab your rod, row out onto the lake (rowing boat included in your stay), and cast your line into pristine waters. Let the silence surround you as you wait for a bite, with nothing but the sound of rippling water and distant bird calls to keep you company.

2. Join a guided fishing safari

For those who take fishing seriously, our trusted local partner organizes professional fishing safaris in the wilderness. These excursions give you access to remote lakes reserved just for your group, expert guidance, and the thrill of catching Arctic species in untouched nature.

Fishing permits and regulations

Fishing in Lapland is an unforgettable experience, but it’s important to follow Finnish fishing regulations to protect nature and fish populations. If you want to fish in Lapland, or anywhere in Finland, you’ll likely need two things.

  • A fisheries management fee
  • A separate fishing permit (depending on the location and method)

The fisheries management fee is a national license required for most people aged 18–69 who fish with spinning rods, traps, nets, or for crayfish. It’s valid across Finland and easy to purchase online.

In addition, some lakes and rivers, especially rapids, flowing waters, and special destinations require a separate permit from the land or waterowner. Always check in advance for any local fishing restrictions, such as bans, size limits, or special regulations for the area. You can find up-to-date information here

If you’re fishing with just a single rod in calm waters, the management fee alone is often enough. But if you’re using multiple rods, fishing at special sites, or setting traps, you’ll need both.

All permit funds go toward maintaining fish populations and protecting natural resources, making your contribution a vital part of sustainable fishing in Lapland.

Ice fishing in Lapland

Winter doesn’t stop the fishing, it just changes the method. Ice fishing, or “pilkkiminen” is a peaceful and deeply Finnish way to enjoy the Arctic silence.

From December to April (depending on ice conditions), visitors can try ice fishing on frozen lakes. All you need is a hand auger, a simple jigging rod, and patience.

Sit by the hole, sip something warm, and wait for perch, whitefish, or even char to bite beneath the thick ice. On clear nights, you might even see the Northern Lights dancing overhead an experience like no other.
