Aurora borealis in real life
In Finland, there have traditionally been strong beliefs and myths surrounding the northern lights. They were often seen as signs or messages from the spirit world, such as ancestors or gods.
Auroras were also used to predict weather, illnesses, or other events. For instance, if the auroras flickered high in the sky, mild weather or snowfall could be expected. Red auroras hinted at mild weather and snow, while white indicated frost. When auroras flared in the northern sky, colder weather was anticipated.
Ancient Saami people believed auroras were living beings capable of hearing and understanding human speech, hence noise was forbidden outdoors during aurora displays. Skolt Saami believed auroras were the souls of the dead engaged in battle.
